What Defines the New Generation of French Winemakers and Artisans?
France has long been the benchmark of wine and gastronomy, from the limestone vineyards of Burgundy to the rich, silky depth of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the elegance of Champagne. But behind the timeless labels and storied appellations, a quiet transformation is underway.
A new generation of winemakers and artisans is reshaping French wine, not by abandoning tradition, but by reinterpreting it with care, conscience, and innovation. At Aptent Gourmet, we proudly work with many of these forward-thinking producers. But what exactly sets them apart?
Respect for Tradition Without Being Bound by It
Today’s new artisans are fluent in the language of terroir, they know the rules, and they choose when to follow them and when to innovate.
Take Domaine Dubois, for example. Béatrice and Raphaël Dubois craft wines from Premier Cru plots in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Savigny-lès-Beaune. Their approach combines traditional Burgundian wine methods with a commitment to expressing the unique character of each vineyard site.
This generation doesn’t make wine by formula. They make it by feel, by observation, and by intuition. They are deeply rooted, but never static.
Sustainability as Standard
For many of these producers, sustainability isn’t a marketing line, it’s a foundational philosophy. Champagne Michel Laval, a grower Champagne house led by siblings Ophélie and Aurélien, farms their vineyards responsibly, bottles on-site, and works only with grapes they’ve grown themselves. It’s Champagne made with intention and integrity.
Champagne Michel Laval, a grower house led by the Laval family, farms their vineyards responsibly, bottles on-site, and works only with grapes they’ve grown themselves. Their commitment to biodiversity includes practices like sexual confusion to manage pests and the use of green manure to enrich the soil.
Small Scale, High Purpose
The new generation is scaling down, not up. These producers focus on craft, not mass.
Domaine Luc Tabordet, with vineyards in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, practices organic and biodynamic agriculture to help the vines reveal their terroirs and full potential. Their wines are vinified naturally with indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention, allowing each cuvée to express its unique character.
Domaine Mardon, specializing in Quincy, produces 100% Sauvignon Blanc wines that showcase the unique expression of their terroir. Their vineyards, some with vines up to 55 years old, are cultivated with respect for the environment, resulting in wines with freshness, fruitiness, and balance.
They're not chasing volume. They're chasing clarity of place, of purpose, and of expression. From natural fermentations to low-sulfur bottling, from grower Champagne to reimagined Rhône whites, this generation embraces experimentation, but always in service of terroir. Their wines and gourmet products don’t try to impress. They aim to express.
Openness, Transparency, and Connection
In contrast to the secrecy of old-guard maisons, today’s winemakers are storytellers. They open their doors, share their soil types, and post their fermentations online. They’re on Instagram, in their vineyards, and at your tasting table. They don’t hide the process. They invite you into it.
At Aptent Gourmet, this connection is central to our mission. We don’t just import bottles, we form relationships. We walk the vineyards, visit the cellars, taste at the source, and bring that story to your table.
Why It Matters
When you choose to support these producers, you’re not just buying wine. You’re investing in a new model of excellence, one that values: Sustainability over scale, craft over conformity, people over prestige.
